Today, ICANN revealed a list of 1,900 new domain names that have been applied for in anticipation of a release of new generic top level domains (gTLDs). While most people are familiar with many of the 22 existing top level domains, such as .com, .org, and .net, the release of new gTLDs could raise the number of top level domains to close to 2,000.
According to reports, the three most popular domain names applied for have been .APP, .HOME, and .INC. It costs $185,00o to apply for one of these new domains, in an attempt to deter frivolous applications, and many companies have applied for long lists of domains they would like to secure.
